Who says T20 is all about big score, raining sixes??? Even Low Scoring contests can be exciting ones as it turned out to be in the match between Rajasthan Royals and Kings 11 Punjab. The match started on time in Capetown which presented a completely different picture. It was bright sunny afternoon compared to the gloomy rainy day yesterday. Kings 11 won the toss and elected to bat. It was not bright thought for them with Karan goel getting run out without facing a ball. Bopara who was the man of the match last time failed this time getting out to Kamran khan who bowled a wonderful spell of 4 overs for just 15 runs and took 2 wickets. It was Sangakara’s 60 and Irfan’s 39 which got Kings 11 to 139 which was below par. It was a great to see the contest between the two Pathan brothers with Irfan getting better of his older bro.
Rajasthan Royals got off to an even worse start with both their openers back in the dug out with just 9 on the board. Irfan first sent back Asnodkar and then smith got peach of a delivery. Then it was a contest between the two brothers yet again but this time they switched their roles. Irfan got some stick this time. But it was getting worse at the other end for royals with 2 more wickets falling in Abdullah’s over. Then came the clever move from Yuvraj..He brought on Piyush chawla and immediately the danger man Pathan got out.36/5 in 7 overs..Not a start that royals would have been expecting when they set out to chase 139. It was looking as if the Royals would break their own record for the lowest score in IPL but they avoided that but couldn’t win the match .Ravinder Jadeja and Shane Warne were playing as of they were trying to save a test match. It looked as if they too had lost hope on the match. They tried a few shots in the end but it was too late and Kings 11 won by 27 runs which just goes to show that small totals can be defended if its your day 🙂 Rajasthan royals have to get their batting together if they are to defend their title. It’s hard to believe that this is the same team which won last year. Click here for the scorecard..This match was the last one to be played in capetown.
Man of the match: Sangakarra
Mega Money = Mega Flops???? Yes that’s what I feel after watching the first match between Royal Challengers and Delhi DareDevils. Nothing seems to be going right for Royal Challengers this season too. What looked like a promising start when they crushed the defending champions Rajasthan Royals seems to be fading away quickly. This is their 4th straight loss and it’s looking really bad for them.
The opening partnership again seems to be the problem for the royals. They have changed their opening batsmen 5 times in 5 matches and still the problem persists with Kallis going for a golden duck of the first ball of the innings.Utthappa soon followed to bring peiterson onto the field. He had to answer lot of people, Mallaya in particular and did that to a certain extent by smashing 37 of 25 balls with 2 4’s and 2 hits over the boundary but he couldn’t hang on and got out trying to switch hit Vettori which was over ambitious. Taylor too got a start but didn’t capitalize.Virat Kohli and Boucher steadied the innings but couldn’t get the big shots going for them. It was only in the penultimate over when Boucher smashed 2 6’s before getting out which helped the challengers get 149 a very small total for daredevils atleast.
Daredevils too got off to a bad start with Sehwag back in the hut in the 2nd over itself. Dilshan again showed why he is such a good T20 batsmen. He played some innovative shots before his partner gave his wicket away. AB looked rusty as he couldn’t get many of the spinners. Appana was a surprise addition to the challenger’s teams. He lured AB to come forward and bowled him, a classic left arm spinner’s dismissal. What looked like an easy chase was turning out to be a difficult one with the rate going to 10.There was a moment in the match which could have turned the match towards challengers. Kumble to de Villiers and he set off for a quick run and Taylor under armed the throw to the stumps and the decision was referred, he was short of his ground but for some bizarre reason Doctrove ruled him not out! Strange indeed! Did Boucher whip off the bails before the direct hit? Didn’t appear that way..Billy does not deserver to be a International umpire after that decision not for me atleast. Despite that decision Challengers could have still won the match if they had done the basics right. Fielding let them down. Perhaps they need some tips from the Chargers.
