It was a super Thursday with both the matches going down the wire. First it was Delhi who clinched a high scoring thriller and then it was Royals who won a thriller via a super over, the first ever in IPL. First I would like to speak about the 2nd match ie between KKR and RR.
Mccullum won the toss and decided to field first considering the conditions. It had rained quite a bit before the match. RR got off to bad start by losing 2 quick wickets in under 3 overs. In came Pathan who joined smith and he started blasting right from the word go.By virtue of his hitting they reached 70 in 8 overs before smith and pathan got out to the mystery man Mendis who made his IPL debut. It was looking as if they would reach 140 but last over got them 18 runs and they reached 150 leaving KKR to chase 151 which was looking very much achievable.
KKR started badly with Mccullum going for 3 but Gayle continued his heroics from the last match smashing the ball to all parts of the ground .They reached 94 for the loss of 5 wickets and it was left to DADA if KKR were to get past 150.He got an able partner in yashpal singh.7 were needed of last over and shane warne handed the ball to the 18 year old Kamran Khan.It was a strange decision to put so much pressure on him but he came up with the goods when he got DADA out leaving KKR 2 runs to win the match. shant could only manage 1 run and the scores were level. That meant we were going to have the first Super Over of IPL. It has happened only ony once in International cricket before between West Indies and New Zealand. A super Over meant each team had to pick 3 batsmen who would play 1 over.Whoever gets the maximum runs win the match.KKR chose Gayle and Mccullum and Dada as the 3 batsmen. Yet again Shane warne gave the ball to Khan who was the best bowler on show for RR. Gayle smashed 3 boundaries and got out on the last by virtue of a well judged catch by smith.16 runs was the target and out came Yusuf pathan and KKR chose Mendis as their man. Yusuf smashed 18 runs in just 4 balls..Mendis had earlier got pathan out but this time Yusuf was too good for him and he was declared the Man of the Match. Would like to mention that Yusuf opened the bowling for RR. Click Here for the complete scorecard.
It was another thriller at Kingsmead with DareDevils beating Super Kings by 9 runs. It was a match which Chennai super kings had firmly in their hand but threw it away with some lackluster batting by the middle order. DareDevils got off to a disastrous start with both the openers getting out in 2 overs. Gambhir went for a first ball duck and sehwag for 6.In came AB and he played cautiously whereas Dilshan was smashing the ball to the fence at will. Dilshan was looking good for a big one but got out immediately after reaching his 50 of just 24 balls.
De Villiers gradually subdued his opponents and hit six sixes and five fours in a 54-ball masterclass. He did have a moment of luck after reaching 50 when compatriot AlbieMorkel was guilty of sloppy fielding at the boundary to drop a simple opportunity of sending De Villiers packing. This was the First century of season 2 and it set up the game for delhi with a target of 189 for Superkings. Super kings got off to a blitzkrieg with Hayden hitting the fastest 50 but as soon as he got out the rate dipped. Suresh raina was carrying on the good work but was loosing partners. When he got out super kings needed only 50 from 35 but they could only manage 41 in 35 and lost 5 wickets including 3 run outs. Click Here for complete scorecard
No prizes for guessing the Man of the Match .It was AB who was simply superb. Delhi team-mate Collingwood of England branded the De Villiers innings “perfect” and recently retired Test batsman Hayden called it a “magnificent, patient and methodical” stand.
It was certainly the best day of IPL so far where we witnessed 2 wonderful matches, one being a high scoring thriller and another one getting decided in the super over.Hope to see such matches in the coming matches. But I must say that Ganguly would be kicking himself for getting out in the penultimate with just 2 runs to win. But then you could argue that it was he who got KKR so close but he couldn’t finish the Job sadly and SRK was almost in tears. Hope Dada learns from his mistakes and does not repeat them in the future.
