They might not have a chance to enter the semis but they definitely can spoil the party for other teams who are trying to get into the semifinals and today was one of those days. A team which had lost 10 out of 12 matches and was down and out of the IPL came up with a stellar performance to clinch a last ball victory against the 2nd best team in the IPL, SuperKings. It now remains to be seen if SRK keeps up his promise by returning to SA for the last match that KKR have with Rajasthan Royals. Set a stiff 189 to chase the Knight Riders got off to a blistering start. Mccullum has been criticized for not leading the team from the front but today he came out with all gunz blazing. Morkel bearing the brun of his explosive shots in the initial overs. Ganguly on the other side was struggling. Dhoni turned to his spinner Murali in the 5th over and he struck when an inside edge from Ganguly clipped the leg stump bail and he was out of here with just 4 from 14 balls. Brad Hodge joined Mccullum and they got the score moving at a good rate. They crossed 100 in the 12th over and were very much in the race. Just when it was looking all good for the KKR Mccullum got out. He tried a slog against Jakati and could only manage an inside edge on to his stumps. At first it was not clear as to whether Dhoni had dislodged the bails or was it the ball which first removed the bail. The decision was referred to the third umpire and it was OUT. He made 84 of just 48 balls with 11 shots to the boundaries and 3 towering sixes. That brought David Hussey to the crease who had a blitzkrieg innings the other day against Chargers but he couldn’t repeat that today when he had a mixup with Brad Hodge and he was runout for only 1. That brought Wriddhhiman Saha to join Hodge. 56 were needed from 28 balls, exactly 12 runs per over. It was looking tough but not impossible. The KKR needed a Rohit Sharma kind of innings the other day and it was just that. Brad Hodge hit 31 of those 56 to finish at 71(43) and Wriddhiman gave him good support with a cameo of 25 of 13 balls. They were so brilliant that they needed only 6 from 6 but it was interesting to see Raina bowl the last over. He got it to the last ball with his tight bowling but in the end Kolkata emerged the winners.
Earlier SuperKings won the toss and elected to bat. They had dropped Hayden. Its been Hayden who has been the mainstay in the side and it was interesting to see how the SuperKings would go about with their batting. Bailey who was replacing him opened with Patel and they got the SuperKings off to a flier with both the openers hitting shots freely and were fed with some loose balls too. They reached 50 in the 5th over but just when you thought that the SuperKings were running away with the match a brilliant piece of fielding from Shukla ended Parthiv’s innings. A few overs later another direct hit from Shukhla sent the other opener Bailey back to the dugout. SuperKings were sitting pretty at 84 at the end of 10 overs and Dhoni Raina combo was on the ground. Raina was brilliant with his timing and got 3 DLF maximums and reached his 50 as well but got out with 3 overs remaining in the innings. Albie Morkel hit some lusty blows in the end to get the SuperKings to a score of 189. Click here for the scorecard
