The most awaited film of the year ‘3 IDIOTS’ is out and as they say “Sabar ka phal mitha hota hain” it has been worth the wait :). Although 3 idiots is 2 hours 50 min long, I can promise you that you won’t come out of the theater disappointed as the movie has many memorable moments which will stay with u for sometime if not forever. This is the sort of movie you’ll take home with a smile and a song on your lips, unless the hype has entirely messed up with your expectations.
3 Idiots is loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller “Five point someone”. The film retains the soul of the book but at the same time the movie is different from the book.3 Idiots is in fact a hardcore Bollywood flick, which demands its own share of subjectivity while you watch many parts of the story fit very conveniently into the larger scheme of things. Five Point Someone has over the years achieved cult status and has its own loyal fans and 3 Idiots lives up to that status.
Message from 3 IDIOTS
3 Idiots takes a dig at the existing Indian education system where rot learning has become part of the life of every student in order to stay ahead in the race and also points out the dangerous repercussions of parental pressure to pursue traditional streams. Though the movie makes significant points it still retains the lightness of being another ‘Munnabhai’ film throughout.
The movie is set on an engineering campus “Imperial College” in Delhi. Aamir Khan plays the character Rancho – He is not a guy who would give u the exact definition as given in the book but always looks at things from a different perspective. Everyone knows that Salt water is a good conductor of electricity but Rancho applies it on his ‘pissed-off’ senior to escape getting ragged on his very first day in the college. From time to time he keeps giving free advice to his roommates Farhan and Raju (played by R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi), and in the process makes them realize their mistakes. He believes in striving for excellence rather than success, which infact is the core message of the film. Viru Sahastrabuddhe aka VIRUS (played by Boman Irani) is the dean who is always at loggerheads with Rancho who with his unique wit manages to rattle the strict head of the college. Pia( played by Kareena) is the daughter of the dean and turns out to be the lady love of Rancho.
Rancho can just do anything right from convincing Farhan to follow his passion in photography rather than fulfill his parent’s dream of obtaining an engineering degree to giving Raju the strength to fight back after a suicide attempt. He even manages to convince Pia(whom he does not even know) that the guy is not right for him and finally falls in love with her.
The movie has many moments but a few which deserve a mention are Aamir’s entry scene, A wonderfully endearing character named Millimeter showing off a group of pups, calling the little one Kilobyte and the bigger one Megabyte, and their mother Gigabyte, the dinner situation at Sharman’s house, Kareena’s Sister wedding scene, Sharman’s job interview, Teachers day special – the laugh riot orchestrated by Aamir which he manages to achieve by interchanging the words Chamatkar to Balaatkar.
The film is told mostly in flashback, with Farhan and Raju setting off to find their buddy 10 years after they graduate from college. Starting their journey from Delhi and going to Shimla, Manali and finally ending up in Ladakh, what surprise is in store for Farhan and Raju when they finally manage to meet Rancho forms the climax of the film
Aamir Khan: Aamir Khan has once again proved why he is one of the finest actors in the industry right now. He is the heart and soul of 3 Idiots and his comic timing has to be appreciated. .He successfully carries out the role of a 22 year old despite being double the age in real life. The body language which Aamir displays in almost every scene deserves applause. He has lived up to the tag of PERFECTIONIST..Personally speaking he is truly a MR. Wangdu (Movie scientist)
Other Cast: Even though Aamir Khan steals the show, it would have not been possible without the wonderful support cast. After RDB, this triplet has done it yet again!! Watch for the scene where they are drinking on stairs and Sharman and Madhvan challenge Aamir..Sharman Joshi’s character Raju represents the lonely hope for lower income group India and according to me he has delivered his career best performance. Madhavan gets the double duty of giving the voice over for the film as well and he does it wonderfully well Best Supporting Award for 2009. Debutant Omi (LA based actor) plays the irritatingly snobbish nerdy Chatur Ramalingam. He just stands out from the others and manages to bring the house down on many occasions because of his pitch-perfect expressions and delivery. Boman yet again leaves a mark. Kareena is good as always. Jassi girl Mona Singh playing Kareena’s sister is good and so is Javed Jaffrey in his brief part.
Director: A lot was expected from Rajkumar Hirani .Having directed two back to back landmark films of Bollywood – Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai, expectations were going to be high. The combination of producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Hirani and Aamir Khan made it even more exciting. Hirani has used a similar backdrop which he used in his earlier 2 films – A student with challenges, having a dean of Munnabhai MBBS. Along with his co-scriptwriter Abhijat Joshi, Hirani packs in many subtle messages through his narrative and successfully drives home the point that when it comes to planning for one’s future, one must follow their heart and not what their parents expect them to do. Kudos to Hirani for having directed yet another masterpiece. All he touches turns to gold
Music: Shantanu Moitra’s music is already ruling the charts and each and every song has been picturised innovatively with ‘Zoobie Doobie’ being the best visual delight. All the songs are situational which is hard to find in Bollywood movies. ‘Aal Izz Well’ is a song which perfectly fits the positive attitude of the film.
Cinematography: Muralidharan’s cinematography complements the flick well. The ladakh scene stands out in the entire film.
Verdict: ‘3 Idiots’ is a movie with a universal appeal and it’s got its heart in the right place. The movie talks about chasing your dreams and living your life on your terms. It is a perfect blend of comedy and emotions, comedy that makes u cry while laughing n laugh while crying.I wont say that 3 idiots shift+delete Dil Chahta Hai from my memories now but surely this has to be one of the best movies of the year.. 3 IDIOTS is surely going to rock the BOXOFFICE !!!
Rating: 4 point( . . . .) something out of a maximum of 5 points 😀
