The long awaited Apple’s new touchscreen tablet was finally unveiled by Steve Jobs on 27th Jan 2010 at a jam-packed theater in San Francisco and it is named iPad and not iSlate as was being speculated. Apple has this unique distinction of revolutionizing the industry into which they step into. iPod arrived in 2001 and it replaced the Walkman. iPhone showed up six years later to give a new dimension to touch screen mobile phones. With iPad, Apple does not intend to replace anything but instead complement the devices that already exist in the market which seems a risky strategy but Hey this is Apple who like to do things differently.
What is iPad?
iPad is a larger iPod touch with a few additional capabilities as well. It is a device where you can browse the web, read & send email, listen to music, watch videos, play games, read e-books and much more. You can even see some similarities with the Amazon’s Kindle. I would say that iPad is a mix of iPhone, iPod and Kindle.
SIZE ZERO Device
The iPad is a size zero device literally. It is amazingly just 0.5 inches thick and weighs only 680 grams. It also has a 9.7 inch display which by far would be one of the larger screens for a tablet oriented handheld browsing device out there.
Applications have been a key to the success of iPhone and iPod touch and it remains to be seen if the same happens with iPad. The iPad users can run almost the entire 140,000 and more apps in the App Store.12 new innovative apps have also been designed especially for the iPad. Users can buy the apps from 3 stores – iTunes stores, App Stores and iBookstore which would hold ebooks for the iPad.

Apple has always come out with world class gadgets and iPad is no different as far as the sleek deign goes but it falls short in the functionality category. For geeks iPad is just a recreational device and does not serve much purpose but everyone is not a GEEK !!! . Most of the people out there are happy to spend time watching movies/videos, surfing the web and if they get bored can read a book. iPad is a device which definitely gives a great experience in these aspects.
It remains to be seen if iPad will be a game changer which I doubt. The killer application is missing. It will take something more innovative from the Apple team if iPad has to match up to the cult status that iPod or iPhone have garnered over the years. To put it in one sentence iPad is a “WANT” rather than a “MUST HAVE” and maybe even Apple team also feels the same and hence the price tag 😀
