Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils had already done it and on Sunday it was the turn of Chennai to Showcase their talent : Not just how to lose a match but lose it after managing to get it to Super Over which KKR and DD couldn’t do :D. They scripted their own loss and maybe next time when Priyadarshan(who had come to watch the match) makes a movie he can have his script written by the Chennai team. It would surely be a Box office hit just like how the TRP ratings must have sky rocketed for sure during this game. Kings XI won their first game of this IPL season and Preity Zinta was on cloud 9. It just goes to show T20 is not about flat wickets and 200 plus scores but even low scoring encounters can turn out to be humdingers and nobody is complaining or is anyone?? PHOTOS
Chennai Superkings Innings
Chasing a modest 137, the SuperKings began well with both Parthiv Patel and Hayden striking the ball well before nifty bit of bowling from Powar Foxed Hayden. Once Hayden was out Kings XI began to tighten the noose with their slow bowlers. Patel blocked one end up with his sensible style of play and on the other end he was losing partners. First to go was Raina who called for a quick single but Theron’s outclassed him by running him out. Ronaldo must have been happy seeing that bit of smart footwork. Badrinath was unfortunate to be given LBW in the same over. While all this was happening Patel kept his cool but then lost it when the match was almost in Chennai’s hands. He was stumped off chawla. With 16 required from 16 balls and 5 wickets in hand, the Chennai crowd must have been hoping that it would be a cakewalk but it was not to be. PHOTOS
Gony had come in ahead of Kemp who had injured his hand while fielding. Juan Theron, playing his first IPL proved to be Punjab’s bowling hero. He gave away just 3 runs and also removed Gony. It came down to the last over when Chennai needed 10 and 4 wickets in hand. Morkel got a thickish outside edged which raced away to the boundary thus making it 6 in 5. Then it was a comedy of errors as Morkel couldn’t get the ball away and it went to Sanga, Ashwin was off to steal a bye, Sangakarra took a shy at the striker’s end and missed. Irfan gathered and took a shy at the non-striker’s and missed as well! And the worst part for Kings XI was that they took 2 which meant 4 were required of 4 Ashwin managed to level the scores of the 4th ball. Aswhin failed to connect the penultmate ball and 1 was required of the final ball and as expected all the fielders were inside the 30 yard circle. Pressure got to the young man as Irfan kept it slow and Ashwin swings it away straight to mid off, where Kaif takes the dolly and the Match ends in a tie 🙂 PHOTOS
First Super Over of this Season and the crowd went wild as they never expected the match to come so close but nevertheless they were tensed and excited at the same time and so were the billion people watching it on television around the world.
Chennai Chose Hayden, Morkel and Raina to bat and Murali to Bowl
Kings XI chose Yuvraj, Mahela and Irfan to bat and Theron to bowl who was already having a stunning IPL debut
Morkel got a run of the first ball which meant Hayden would be facing the next ball with his Mangoose bat but Theron couldn’t do anything wrong tonight as he hit the Bullz eye. Raina came in and managed to get 2 and a huge 6 of the 2 balls he faced. He looked to go the aerial route once again but this time he top edged it to give Mahela a simple catch. With that SuperKings were allout with one ball remaining. PHOTOS
Kings XI SuperOver
With 10 runs to chase Mahela faced the first ball from his national team mate Murali and he struck it big with a huge 6. Knowing Murali it was no surpise that he got his revenge back when Mahela was caught at long on trying to finish the game in a jiffy. Yuvraj faced a dot ball. 4 from 3. Then came a stunning shot from Yuvraj who reverse swept him to hit the winning runs.
Kings XI Innings
Suresh Raina won the toss and decided to field going by the successful chase the other day against Delhi. Kings XI went with a new opening pair .Irfan who was high on confidence after his blitzkrieg which nearly won the match against Chargers opened the innings with Bopara. Bopara who was the main stay of Kings XI batting all this while was a no show today as he departed for 1. Irfan was hitting the ball well and Sangakkara was giving him good company. The wily off spinner from Srilanka muralitharan was the perfect spy today, taking out two of the most prolific batsmen from his country, with 3 for 16 in his four overs. With Sangakkara and Mahela gone it was left to Yuvraj and Kaif to give their team a respectable score. Yuvraj who had failed in the first 3 games came good as he smashed 4 boundaries and 2 huge sixes to reach 43 of 28 balls. Mohammad Kaif and Manvinder Bisla at the other end were too slow and thus Kings XI ended up with only 136 in their 20 overs. PHOTOS
