The table toppers Mumbai Indians were clashing with the team at the bottom Kings XI Punjab and with the form that Mumbai is in nobody would have expected a thriller out of this game. Chasing 163, Mumbai Indians won the game with 3 balls to spare. With this win they have won 6 out of their 7 games and Kings XI are at the other end of the tunnel having lost 6 out of their 7. They looked better today but still couldn’t hold on to their nerves in the end.
Mumbai Indians Innings
Sachin has been the mainstay of the Mumbai Indians batting line up having scored most runs in the tournament but today he didn’t fire which gave some hope to the Kings XI. After setting a challenging target of 163 on a slow pitch, the Kings XI got the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar when he holed out to pathan off chawal for only 11 in 15 balls. Dhawan looked solid though. He was joined by Pollard who didn’t make full use of the promotion as he could only manage to get 20.Dhawan needed to stay there if Mumbai Indians had to get across the line but that was not to be as he got out immediately after making his 50 of 40 balls. The young and dynamic pair of Rayudu and Tiwary got some quick runs but Rayudu had to go when he went for a wild slog in the 16th over. Bopara struck again when he removed Bravo for only 8. 19 were required from 12 balls. Satish and Tiwari smashed 13 runs in that over which also saw the wicket of Tiwary. Harbhajan Singh and Satish ensured that there were no more hiccups in the chase. PHOTOS
Kings XI Punjab Innings
Earlier Sachin won the toss and decided to bowl. Mahela Jayawardene was captaining the Kings XI side in the absence of Sangakkara who was banned for a match. Malinga and Zaheer got a wicket each in the powerplay to reduce Kings XI to 41/2 in 5 overs. With the score at 88/2 at the end of 10.3 overs it was looking good for the Kings as both Mahela and Marsh had settled down and were looking to score big. But bad running cost the Kings mahela’s wicket as Marsh stood there watching his captain getting run out. Yuvraj soft dismissal dented the Kings further. Marsh playing his first game reached his 50 in 42 balls but soon got out to a wonderful Yorker from Malinga. One ball earlier Harbhajan Singh stunned everyone when he took a catch to send irfan back to the dugout. Lee holed out to midwicket of Zaheer’s next over. Malinga was back to bowl his hat trick delivery and he nearly had it as the Yorker missed the off stump by a whisker. However there was more joy for him as he got one more wicket in that over. His spell of 4-0-22-4 was simply fabulous. Kings XI despite losing wickets regularly reached to a total which appeared to be good on a slow track. PHOTOS
