When you have GOD in your side you have nothing to worry. Mumbai Indians rose to the top of the IPL standings thanks to the batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar splendid innings of 72 in 52 balls who almost carried his bat through to give his side a 5 wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings at their home ground. Dhoni was back but it didn’t make any difference to the Super Kings as they lost their 3rd match in a row.
Mumbai Indians Innings
Mumbai Indians usually efficient bowling attack failed today and as a result they had to chase down a formidable total of 181. Mumbai’s start was not explosive only managing to get 3 4’s in the first 4 overs but a few extras helped them to keep up with the rate. 34/0 in 4 overs. But all that changed when Joginder Sharma was introduced in the 5th over. Shikhar Dhawan opened the floodgates when he scored 3 boundaries in that over. Dhawan accelerated further in the next by pulling Balaji for consecutive sixes. While Dhawan was smashing the ball to all parts of the ground, Sachin preferred to play the silent partner which worked wonderfully well as Chennai couldn’t break the pair until the 9th over when Dhawan miscued one off Jakati for a well made 56 of 34 balls. Murali removed Tiwary for 2 and Joginder Sharma got his man Satish for only 5. These 2 quick wickets had dropped the scoring rate and Mumbai Indians needed 48 from 30.
Dhoni introduced Perera for the first time in the 16th over and it proved to be the turning point in the match as he dished out 5 full tosses and Sachin was not going to miss out on the freebies. Pollard too joined the party with 2 4’s. From then on Mumbai needed only 29 from 24 which in T20 terms was way too easy. Pollard hit Murali for a 6 but got out the very next ball. In the meanwhile Sachin had got to his 50 which was his 5th in IPL. Unfortunately he got out in the 19th over when Balaji’s slow bouncer got him to pull which Dhoni gleefully accepted. Bravo’s flamboyant flick over long-on leved the scores and Mumbai reached the target with 1 over to spare. Sachin was awarded the man of the match for his 72 which is his highest score in IPL. PHOTOS
Chennai Super Kings Innings
Sachin won the toss and put the super kings into bat. Mclaren bowled a tidy first over giving away only 5 runs but there was nothing tidy about Zaheer’s over when Hayden smashed him for 4 consecutive boundaries.4 of a KIND :D. Having seen him hit such wonderful shots with his conventional bat it was strange to see him ask for the Mongoose bat when harbhajan came on to bowl. He lasted only 2 balls before a slider from around the stumps caught him plumb in front. Patel was the next to go as he dragged one from Mclaren on to his stumps. Raina and Badrinath came together. Raina started off in flamboyant style as he always does with a 6 and a 4 off Bravo who went for plenty today. Mumbai were not able to break the partnership as they added 142(Highest in IPL for any wicket) but with so many wickets in hand Chennai should have got close to 200 but Malinga’s superb final over which went for only 7 restricted them to 180.
