It was not the usual T20 match that you would expect but nevertheless it turned out to be a nerve wracking game. Gambhir playing his first match as an IPL captain was cool as a cucumber as he guided his team to a straightforward chase with an old-fashioned innings full of sensible strokeplay. Delhi were the firm favourites but T20 is so unpredictable that you just can’t take things granted in this format. Had Pathan taken the catch of Manhas at a crucial moment in the match the result might have well been in favour of Preity Zinta who wore a traditional Punjabi dress.
Set a very modest target of 143, everybody would have thought it will be a walk in the park for Delhi but Sreesanth got the ball rolling in his first over for the Kings XI when he got Sehwag to edge one to slips and had the dangerous Dilshan out for a Duck. Double jeopardy for Delhi and the crowd went crazy. It got worse when AB was runout leaving delhi tottering at 47/3 in 8. In came karthik, played his shots and got out. Gambhir played sensibly along with Manhas to get Delhi past Kings 11 score of 142. PHOTOS
Kings XI innings
Earlier Gambhir won the toss and decided to field. Nannes and Mahroof made sure that their captains decision to bowl first was the right one. However the first blow to Kings XI came in the form a superb runout when Manhas managed to get a direct hit to send Bisla back to the dugout. Bopara looked to be in sublime touch playing his shots. Sangakkara on the other hand was no less stroking the ball well before his teammate Mahroof got him for a 9 ball 17. In came Yuvraj which was a bit of a surprise as nobody was expecting him to play this game. He could only manage to hit a boundary before scooping a catch to Gambhir of Mahroof. Jayawardene Got out to a first ball DUCK. All of a sudden Kings XI were reduced from 39/1 to 44/4 in a space of 7 deliveries. Bopara and Pathan steadied the ship with a 60 run partnership before Pathan got out when he charged down the track to Dilshan who cleverly slowed up the ball and Karthik did the rest. Kaif was done in by a tossed up delivery from Mishra and karthik managed to get his 2nd victim for the day. Bopara got to his 50 but soon perished trying to up the scoring rate. Nannes and Mahroof ensured that Kings XI got only 28 runs in the final 4 overs. The fact that Sreesanth was the 4th highest scorer for Kings XI showed how disciplined Delhi was.
Kings XI were humbled before their home crowd but it was a good game of T20 even thought it didn’t have some fascinating hitting that the earlier game between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals saw. It was a bad day at office for 2 teams owned by Bollywood Stars. Shilpa Shetty couldn’t control her emotions after seeing her team lose by such a close margin. Priety Zinta too was not in the usual joyous mood and we can’t blame her for that. Perhaps the 2 teams should concentrate more on the game of cricket rather than on the 2 lovely ladies.
