Match 48: Ganguly lashing out at his team after losing to RCB a few days ago certainly didn’t do any good as Kolkata were thrashed by the Super Kings. The man who changed the face of Indian cricket a decade ago has been found wanting when it comes to ideas and with this loss his job is only going to get tougher. If the same show continues in the remaining 2 matches then you can be rest assured the KKR won’t be going into the semis for the 3rd time in IPL. It does not do any justice to the budding talent that they possess.
Chennai SuperKings Innings
Defending 139, Ganguly might have been hoping that Gayle is Kolkata’s Ashwin when he gave the ball to him. It was not an auspicious start with Gayle sending down a wide which went to the boundary but he came back to disturb the timber of Hayden who tried to sweep him and missed it altogether. But that was the only wicket to fall as Raina and Vijay made short work of a small target. Raina was dealing in boundaries and Chennai raced to 60 off five overs. Raina brought up his 50 in 24 balls. The duo raised the fastest team hundred of the IPL. Vijay who was slow to begin with opened up in the latter half of the innings and remained unbeaten on 49 of 38 balls. Chennai got to the target with 39 balls to spare which meant they zoomed to the 2nd position in the standings thanks to the jump in the run rate. PHOTOS
Kolkata Knight Riders Innings
Ganguly won the toss and decided to bat on a track which looked to be spinner friendly. Dhoni tossed the ball to the off spinner Ashwin who bowled a tight first over giving away only 3 runs. Ganguly smashed 2 boundaries of Bollingers next over. Chris Gayle was too ambitious trying to repeat the shot that got him a 6 the previous ball off Ashwin but was stumped comfortably. Brendon McCullum tried to sweep but only top edged it to be caught by Murali at short fine leg. Ashwin had got 2 wickets in an over for the 2nd time in this IPL. Ganguly was given a harsh decision as the ball was clearly missing the leg stump but Sanjay Hazare didn’t think so. Brilliant work from Dhoni sent back Hussey for a duck and it was Ashwin yet again The Kolkata innings was in complete disarray with the score reading 18/3 in 25 balls. Ashwins mesmerizing spell destroyed Kolkata’s top order. Angelo Mathews and Manoj Tiwary revived the innings to some extent with a 73-run stand but Murali , Raina and Jakati got a wicket each in the death overs to restrict them to 139. PHOTOS
