Kings XI upset Mumbai to win their first game at home

Kumar Sangakkara led from the front with a fine half-century to power Punjab to a well deserved victory. The 2 teams which were going to clash tonight came into the match with very different intentions – Kings XI had no hope of making it to the semi finals and Mumbai Indians were just a win away from securing a berth in the semi final. However all that didn’t matter as Mumbai Indians didn’t have an answer to an inspired Kings XI unit who didn’t put a foot wrong in the entire match to snatch an easy victory and as a result have opened up the IPL standings. It is a pity that we had to wait so long to see Kings XI produce their best all-round performance of the tournament but on the brighter side they can spoil the party for some of the teams trying to guarantee a spot in the semi finals.

Kings XI Innings

Set to chase a modest 155, Kings XI got off to a flier as Jayawardene continuing his good form hitting some classy shots to propel Kings XI to 31 in 3 overs. However Malinga came up with his slower one to deceive Mahela to spoon a catch to Tiwary. With Mahela gone , Barath and Sangakkara kept the scoreboard ticking.81 came in the first 10. Duminy got a wicket of his first ball when he had Barath caught in front for 33. The stylish Sangakkara brought up his 50 in 39 balls but soon departed when Malinga had him caught at long off. Mumbai Indians would have been hoping that would open the floodgates but Irfan Pathan and Reetinder Sodhi saw Kings XI home without further hiccups. PHOTOS

Mumbai Indians Innings

Sachin won the toss and decided to bat on a slow pitch. Mumbai Indians made a cautious start hitting 7 runs of the first over from Lee. Irfan struck with his first ball when he bowled Shikhar Dhawan. Rayudu came in and played some delightful strokes of the faster bowlers but a change of pace brought about an immediate shift in momentum, as Chawla breached Rayudu’s defences with a topspinner. Chawla struck again when he had Tiwary stumped by an alert Sangakkara for only 4. Sachin has been the mainstay of Mumbai’s batting and he looked good until Chawla bowled him for 29. Mumbai Indians were struggling at 74/4 in 10. Duminy playing his first match made a brisk 35 which got them to a decent total of 154. Irfan pathan too snatched 3 wickets in what has to be said was a fine display of bowling from the men in red. PHOTOS
