Match 59(3rd place play-off): Gilchrist summed up the game for DC when he said “We have saved our worst for the last”. Although the 2 teams had lost their semi finals, a lot was riding on this match for both the teams as they had an opportunity book their place in CLT20. But it looked like only one team had turned up for the game and it was RCB. Deccan Chargers were abysmal, being bowled out for 82(Lowest score in IPL3) which was a result of bad shot selection and some tight bowling from the Bangalore boys. It was that kind of a day when nothing went right for the boys in blue. Anirudh scored half the runs, only 2 batsmen reached double figures, 4 batsmen made no score and the last four wickets added nothing which says a lot. Bangalore knocked off the runs with 9 wickets in hand to book their spot in the Champions League.
Match 58(2nd Semi Final) – Chennai Super Kings put up an inspired performance with the ball to not only defend a modest total but instead thrash the defending champions by 38 runs. Chargers had done half the job by restricting the powerful batting line up that Chennai boasted of to only 142 but they still had to complete the other half which was to chase down the score. But unfortunately their foreign stars Gilchrist and Gibbs batted in a manner contrary to their reputation, preferring caution over attack in the Powerplay which resulted in Chargers making their lowest score (23/2) in the first 6 overs. The required rate which was 7 at the start zoomed to 10 at the end of 10 overs as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Deccan’s sharp bowling effort went in vain as their batting crumbled to be bowled out for 104 on a tricky pitch.
Match 51: Deccan Chargers pulled off a thriller against Kings XI winning their 4th consecutive game by virtue of which they are still in contention for that all important semi final berth. Put in to bat at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharmashala, Kings XI posted 174 on a wicket which had more grass than all the pitches combined in India. Chargers two star overseas batsmen Gilchrist and Symonds didn’t do much, but once again the local talent did it for them. Suman and Rohit’s timely partnership of 66 in 39 balls got them past the line. If you had to name a batsman who can be graceful yet lethal it has to Rohit Sharma who made a brilliant 68 from 38 and ensured that Chargers didn’t choke this time (referring to the game against Rajasthan)
Deccan Chargers might have lost 5 games on a trot leaving them to win the rest of their 5 games to make it to the semi finals. Every game is a virtual quarterfinal for them and the Chargers surely know how to do it when under pressure. After having stunned the Royal Challengers at their home ground it was time to get a win at their adopted home ground Nagpur. This time it was Chennai who didn’t look like a team which had made it to the semi finals of the previous 2 editions. They are now in the same position as the Chargers are – to win the rest of their 3 games.
It was a sea of RED as it has always been at Chinnaswamy stadium but it was the team in BLUE who emerged victorious and silenced the 55,000 odd fans. Suman and Symonds engineered a victory which looked improbable. The chargers were in complete control when they bowled giving away only 92 runs in the first 14 overs but they let the game slip by giving away 92 runs in the rest of the 6 which gave Bangalore a very competitive total. Bangalore were in control giving away 112 runs in the first 14 overs but it took a calm T Suman and an aggressive Andrew Symonds to change the course of the game. With this win Deccan Chargers have kept their chances alive to reach the semi finals.

Chasing 185 the Chargers were rocked early when Uthappa took a brilliant low catch to send Mishra back to the dugout for 9. However Adam Gilchrist scored a quick 30 but as usual once again he gave away his wicket trying to give charge to Kumble who produced a googly and the keeper did the rest. Rohit Sharma too threw his wicket away when he chipped one straight to dale steyn. Suman was promoted to no 3 and he didn’t disappoint his team mates as he got 78 runs from only 57 balls. He anchored the chase all along and Symonds played a brilliant knock of 53 from only 24 balls to give the Chargers a win after 5 loses. PHOTOS
Many might say Rajasthan Royals defied all odds when they beat Deccan chargers by 2 runs in a thriller but if you actually closely look at the statistics it was no surprise. Rajasthan Royals have an amazing record of defending a 150 plus total to their credit and Deccan Chargers have the worst record at home. Deccan Chargers had a chance to put the brakes on the record held by the RR but as usual they messed it up. This is the 5th defeat on the trot making it really difficult for them to reach the semifinals. Rajasthan Royals on the other hand have kept their hopes alive by moving to the 4th spot.
Mumbai Indians are on a roll as they registered their 7th win in 8 matches when they crushed the Deccan Chargers by 63 runs. Rayudu and Tiwary were the stars with the bat for the Mumbai team and ensured that they got to a big total of 178 which proved to be too much for the Chargers in the end. This is the 4th consecutive loss for the Chargers putting them in a position where they need to win 5 out of the 6 matches if the defending champions want to book a semifinal berth.

The nature of T20 is such that even 1 or 2 overs can change the fortune of a team and today there was only one man who stood in the way of Deccan Chargers from potentially topping the table. Bhaji, the Turbanator first came up trumps with the bat when he fired Mumbai Indians to a defendable total with a quickfire 49 from just 18 balls and then he needed only 2 balls to send back Gilchrist dealing a big blow to the Chargers chase and in the end Mumbai Indians won the match easily by 41 runs. As a result of this win the Indians are sitting pretty at the top of the table with 10 points from 6 games. Harbhajan sizzled with both bat and ball but that didn’t stop the match referee from handing out a $15000 fine for sledging.
Way back in 2009 on May 13th the chargers faltered against Delhi to throw away a match which was there for the taking and today on 21st March 2010 Delhi returned the favour. It was Bhatia who did the damage that time around and today it was Symonds who turned it around for the chargers. It was an all round performance from the Deccan boys as Delhi crashed to their 3rd successive defeat in 5 matches and Chargers winning their 2nd home game to carry their winning run to 3 matches. They join the Royal Challengers at the top with 6 points each.
Deccan Chargers created History by winning their first home game ever in IPL at cuttack and also registering their first win against Kings XI in 5 matches but not before Irfan Pathan tried to pull off the improbable with an audacious innings. With this result Kings XI slumped to its third straight defeat in the competition.
